A digital classroom – in a van! The Digital Media Van is a fully-equipped mobile classroom boasting such facilities as air conditioning, Webasto heating, its own power source and mobile satellite broadband. The van is used for teaching young people how to use audio and video production software, amongst other things. Soundsmith was asked to design a system which would enable the tutor to display the video output of any one of the eight students’ laptops on a centrally mounted LCD display. Working in a vehicle presents its own unique challenges, such as access restrictions, awkward mounting positions, cable routing and obtaining a flat level! But Soundsmith rose to these challenges and fitted a Sony 26” LCD display, Kramer 8 way Audio/Video selector and 8x Desktop-mounted VGA /Audio sockets around the perimeter of the classroom along with a pair of active monitor speakers provided by the client. The result is a high quality video display and switching system which is extremely intuitive to operate.
